There are people missing at the Affiliate Summit booths

As I write this article, I’m on a plane full of optimism heading to Vegas for Affiliate Summit West. I’m actually quite surprised that we were able to take off – as the weight of business cards and thick wallets must be quite heavy!

For anybody who is a regular at ASW, you can attest that you tend to see a lot of familiar faces when you go. The familiar faces are like a warm blanket that make you feel at home but as we’re headed to Vegas, we’ll change that to them being the Vodka for your Red Bull.

On the flip side of that coin is the new blood. For every new face you see at the conference, welcome them as they just brought an injection of enthusiasm to the game. They might get a bit blown away by the show, the lack of sleep and make the mistake of trying to book morning meetings, but for every new Talent that attends and starts to work in our industry, the stronger our industry will get. At the end of the day, we all might be from separate companies but we are definitely in this together. The more value that we deliver to advertisers and consumers as a whole, the stronger all of our balance sheets will look.

Prior to the diving into the networking events, losing my voice, demagnetizing my room key a few times and ringing up taxi receipts, I wanted to take a look at the show from a different point of view:

Who are the people that you don’t see at the booths?

When you check out the various networking events you will definitely see lots of talented people. What you won’t see – yet – is the additional bodies that are needed by these companies. The people that are needed to take each company to a new level of success.

If you ever want to check the pulse of our industry, check out who is attending, who is hiring and see how many they are hiring.

To save you time I can tell you that out of all of the companies that are exhibiting at the Meet Market there are forty one companies that are actively recruiting for new staff! That forty one might sound like a lot but that number ONLY includes the ones that have open career opportunities visible on their sites. Many don’t have Careers sections but they are mentioning open positions throughout their networks. Add the cherry on top of companies that would create positions if a Rock Star became available and that number easily doubles and possibly hits 100+.

The positions vary from Business Development to Affiliate Management to Marketing to Tech to Support positions but the race for talent is definitely on. As the industry grows so does the competition level for Top Candidates. Just the other day LinkedIn let me know that 19% of my network had switched jobs in 2012. Some of those are obviously promotions but that is still a large number. If you speak with top candidates you will see that some are getting multiple offers and some were even offered jobs the same or next day of announcing that they’ve left their place of work. Incredible!

For Employers, I encourage you to:

  • be prepared for some of your employees to leave you
  • try to do what you can to make them want to stay
  • showcase what you offer as an Employer and all of your open and upcoming opportunities
  • move quickly on filling positions when you see a candidate you like. More than likely another company is preparing an offer

Success waits for no one. Fill your booths before your competitors fill theirs.
